If you become ill and don't have a regular doctor, what do you do? Your options are fairly limited - you can wait out the illness and hope it passes or you can make a trip to the emergency room. Neither of these scenarios offer the same kind of personalized care that you get when you establish yourself with a primary care physician. At ProMed Clinics in Fredriksted, St. Croix, Dr. Lisa Jolly offers unparalleledPrimary Care care to her patients as their primary care physician. We've listed a few reasons why having a primary care physician is beneficial to you, your health and your bank account.

Referrals and resources

If you visit your Fredriksted primary care physician with an issue that requires a specialist, the staff at ProMed clinics can easily refer you to the proper place and transfer all the necessary information. When you try to arrange these appointments yourself, there can be a delay in treatment. Primary care physicians like Dr. Lisa Jolly also have contacts outside of the immediate medical community and can provide you with information such as support groups or training courses.

An advocate on your side

Visiting a specialist can be confusing and overwhelming, particularly if you're nor familiar with their branch of medicine or their office practices. Having a relationship with your Fredriksted primary care physician means that you have a capable mediator between yourself and other healthcare providers. Dr. Jolly is happy to answer any questions you may have after an appointment, whether it's with her or another doctor.

Money and time-saving

As we mentioned before, visiting an emergency room is often the first line of defense for people who become ill and do not have a primary care physician. This can be extremely frustrating; if your condition does not warrant immediate treatment, you may sit for several hours before being seen by an emergency room physician, and it may result in a very expensive bill for a minor problem. Calling your Fredriksted primary care physician at ProMed Clinics, however, means you can schedule a convenient appointment and be assured that you will be given the proper attention.

We are now accepting new patients, so if you need a primary care physician on your side, we encourage you to call ProMed Clinic in Fredriksted, St. Croix today!

Find out how we can help you manage your diabetes symptoms for life.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that can affect anyone. If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, chances are you have a lot of questions about how to manage your blood sugar levels and keep yourself healthy. Turn to your Frederiksted family physician, Dr. Lisa Jolly, to find out what diabetic treatment is right for you.

Q. What is diabetes?

A. Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to produce insulin, which causes increased glucose (sugar) levels in the blood. If left untreated, this condition can cause serious complications such blindness, extremity amputation, kidney failure or heart disease. There are two different types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.

Q. What are the symptoms?

A. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then it’s time to see your family doctor in Frederiksted:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Increased hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Vision changes
  • Tingling hands or feet
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Dry skin
  • Sores that don’t heal quickly

Q. How is diabetes diagnosed?

A. Only your Frederiksted doctor can properly diagnose whether you have diabetes or not. A blood screening is often the best way to check blood sugar levels. If type 1 diabetes is suspected, a urine test may also need to be performed.

Q. What are my treatment options?

A. Your treatment plan will depend on the type of diabetes you have. By changing your diet, incorporating more physical activity into your routine and by maintaining a healthy weight you can help to lessen your symptoms and keep blood sugar levels within a healthier range. We would be happy to talk to you about how much exercise and what kinds of exercises are best for you, as well as what foods you should be consuming and what foods to nix from your diet.

You will also need to monitor your blood sugar levels everyday. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes will require insulin therapy. Often insulin is administered through injections but it can also be taken orally. We may also prescribe other medications to help manage your blood sugar levels.

ProMed Clinics is here to provide quality healthcare to people in the Frederiksted area. From hypertension and diabetes to regular checkups, schedule an appointment with us and continue leading a healthier life.

A hyperextension injury is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries incurred by children through adults in their senior years. This injury often results from a hard fall during strenuous physical activity such as playing football, rugby or karate or even from falling on a wet floor or other slippery surface. Hyperextension of the elbow or knee requires medical attention from an orthopedic specialist or Hyperextension family physician such as Lisa O. Jolly MD at the Frederiksted location of ProMed Clinics.

Symptoms of Hyperextension

Dr. Jolly often sees patients with hyperextensions of the elbow or knee when they experience:

  • a bending backwards of the extremity beyond its usual range of motion
  • immediate and intense pain that continues after the initial impact
  • loss of strength
  • swelling and reddened skin
  • deformity of the joint
  • spasm of the bicep muscle (in the case of elbow injury)
  • inability to straighten the limb
  • numbness

These symptoms can indicate an underlying fracture, dislocation and injury to the ligaments and other connective tissues of the elbow or knee. X-rays confirm this diagnosis.

According to the Mayo Clinic, hyperextension sometimes affects the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament at the front of the knee. Additionally, people may hyperextend their backs--especially in the cervical or neck area of the spinal column. This type of injury is extremely serious and requires immediate transport to a hospital emergency room for evaluation and treatment.

Treating Hyperextension Injuries

Cold therapy with ice or chemical cold packs reduces swelling. Bracing and rest help with pain and swelling as do over the counter medications such as ibuprofen. Some injuries are severe and require referral to an orthopedic specialist who may recommend physical therapy or even surgery.

Consult Dr. Jolly

Dr. Jolly is a board-certified American Family Physician. Expert in the care of the day to day health and well-being of patients of all ages, Dr. Jolly uses the annual physical in her Fredericksted clinic to assess and treat acute illness and chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

If you take a fall and suspect hyperextension, contact ProMed Clinics right away. Dr. Jolly and her friendly staff will carefully evaluate your injury and advise appropriate treatment. Call (340)773-0007. Walk-ins are welcome, too!

Tags: Annual Physicals

Annual PhysicalsIf you are in relatively good health, is an annual physical really necessary? According to the medical professionals at ProMed Clinics in Frederiksted, it is. Annual physicals aren't just for those individuals who are already sick or who are at an elevated risk for becoming sick. Here are four reasons annual physicals are important - even if you're healthy.

1. They Can Help You Prevent Various Medical Conditions

Annual physicals aren't necessarily meant to treat health conditions you already have. Rather, they are designed to help you prevent various medical conditions from developing in the first place. When you visit your doctor at ProMed Clinics in Frederiksted for your annual physical, you will discuss your current health situation and habits. Your doctor will then make any recommendations needed to make sure you maintain your excellent health.

2. They Allow Your Doctor to Catch Your Condition Early

If your body does begin to develop a certain disease, illness or condition, the sooner you find out about it, the better. This is because most conditions are easier to cure the sooner they are diagnosed. By visiting ProMed Clinics yearly, you increase the chances that your developing conditions will be caught and treated quickly.

3. They Remind You to Make Your Health a Priority

For many people, their healthy lifestyle often becomes neglected as the pressures of real life get in the way. Thankfully, a yearly physical is a good reminder to change this. When you look at the calendar and see that you will be visiting your doctor soon, you are much more likely to make healthy choices that will give you a positive checkup.

4. They Can Save You Time and Money

While visiting ProMed Clinics in Frederiksted for your annual physical may cost a little time and money upfront, the savings you can see as a result of your visit can really add up. Treating serious health conditions can be costly and time consuming. By seeking routine preventative care, you may be able to avoid these costly expenses altogether.

Maintaining excellent health doesn't just involve treating illnesses, diseases and conditions as you acquire them. It also means preventing these conditions from occurring in the first place. Visiting ProMed Clinics in Frederiksted for your annual physical is one way to do just that. Call to set up your next appointment today!
